Introduction
This small Taoist temple is located in central Beijing yet rarely visited by foreign tourists. The temple buildings are centred around two large, serene courtyards. Sometimes you will hear monks chanting or spot worshipers writing their prayers on the red ribbons hung around the trees.
Don’t miss
Clay Depictions of the Devils
76 halls within the temple contain numerous clay depictions of the devils and torture awaiting sinners in hell – enough to induce nightmares in any naughty child! The detail is impressive and reveal the vivid imagination of the artists.
Beijing Folklore Museum
Located at the back of the temple, this small museum contains interesting exhibits of local folklore, accompanied by helpful English descriptions.
Chinese New Year Fair
During the Chinese New Year, the Dongyue Temple hosts a popular fair – with lots of cultural activities, lion dancing and snacks. Tourists are welcome to join in, and it’s a great opportunity to experience the local Chinese New Year customers.
