Introduction

A fun museum for the kids, the China Science and Technology Museum covers four floors with various permeant and temporary exhibitions, as well as four theatre areas. There are lots of interactive activities – clearly designed to spark children’s interest in science.

There is a particularly strong focus on modern technological developments, although the exhibitions on Chinese contributions to scientific knowledge and discovery are also worth checking out. Helpfully most exhibits are accompanied by English translations.

Exploration and Discovery Hall

Full of interactive activities, this hall includes everything from microscopic discoveries to the exploring universe. The sections on motion, light and electricity are particularly good fun.

Glory of China Hall

Displaying exhibits from throughout Chinese history, the Glory of China Hall leads you through a fascinating journey of agricultural and domestic innovation through to large scale mining or energy projects. Learn about the famous “four inventions” of China – gunpowder, printing, the compass, and paper making.

Special Effect Theatres

There are four theatres within the museum – the Dome Theatre, Large-Screen Theatre, Motion Theatre, and 4D Theatre. These show short films and planetarium shows throughout the day.

Tickets: 30 RMB (adults), 20 RMB (students), free (kids under 1.3m)

Opening hours: 9:30 – 17:00

Recommended visit: 2-3 hours

Transport: metro line 8/ 15 to Olympic Park station (奥林匹克公园 – exit G), walk East for 2 minutes (crossing the river) then turn left onto East Hujing Road (湖景东路). The museum is located 5 minutes on your right – look out for the large Dome Theatre.
