Standing to the west of Tiananmen Square, this building is the political heart of China. It is where important conferences and events such as the annual National People’s Congress are held.
You may be surprised to learn that this modern building, built in 1959, is actually larger than the forbidden city and one of the largest halls in the world! Inside, a variety of halls and auditoriums provide for conferences, and every autonomous region (such as Hong Kong) has its own hall, reflecting their political powers.
The Great Hall of the people is a great spot to catch sight of famous government officials and the occasional mysterious visitor. Keep an eye out for any cars arriving with a police escort or large crowds gathering!
When there are no official events taking place inside, visitors are welcome to visit. These tours follow various routes and enable you to see the impressive architecture and ornate decor up close, admire beautiful artwork, watch a short film on the history of the building
